The library completed a major redecorating project in 1958. New furniture replaced fifty-year-old pieces and the whole interior received fresh paint. Director Lucille Brown (on the left next to children’s librarian Marie Neuman, who had resigned as head librarian in 1935 but had returned to the library in 1952) believed the project dramatically improved the atmosphere in the library.
